| Family support begins with
the premise that all families, regardless of income or ethnic
background, need support to best nurture their children's
intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development.
Family support programs are designed to help children by working with
families to prevent problems with a focus on family and community
strengths. By blending and
leveraging existing resources and providing funding through Smart Start - the following
programs are made possible to the young children and their families: Parents
As Teachers: Encourages parents to take an active role in
their children's development and education. This program
provides home visits, group meetings, screenings, and referral
networks. Breastfeeding
Education and Support: Provides information, encouragement
and support to women who are interested in breastfeeding. Project
Family Read: Provides a one-semester parenting and early
childhood education, family support, parent-child relations, and
tutoring for families. Adolescent
Parenting Program: Provides intensive, family centered
services to pregnant and parenting adolescents.
